Foster care homes provide a critical link between our acceptance of animals into St. Francis and getting them placed in adoptive homes. Since we do not currently have facilities to house all of our animals, we are limited on the number of animals we can take in, by the number of foster homes we have available.
Anyone wishing to foster a cat or kitten for St. Francis, must first complete the Cat Foster Home Program Application. Fostering is for a minimum of 5 days. Foster families are expected to provide the animal with food, water, shelter and of course, love and companionship. St. Francis is responsible for any veterinary care needed while the animal is in foster care. Foster families are expected to follow Foster Home Guidelines for Cats while our cats and kittens are in their care.
When a foster family receives an animal to foster, they will also receive a slip of paper to be used for tracking the animals medical history while in their care. Also, any pertinent information regarding the temperment and personality of the animal should be recorded, as this will assist in placing the animal in a permanent home.
When a cat in foster care is deemed ready for adoption, the Cat Care Coordinator will notify the foster family as soon as a space is available at PetsMart. The cat can then be transported by the foster family and will be housed there until it is adopted into a permanent home.
Anyone wishing to foster a dog or puppy for St. Francis, must first complete the Dog Foster Home Program Application.
Our dogs remain in foster care homes until they are adopted into a permanent home. Foster families are expected to follow Foster Home Guidelines for Dogs while our dogs and puppies are in their care.
Persons fostering dogs for St. Francis will need to transport the dog to PetsMart on Saturday and/or Sunday, so that the dog can be seen by prospective adoptive families. If the foster family does not object, the Dog Care Coordinator can also provide the name and telephone number of the foster care family to a prospective adoptive family, who then contacts the foster family and arranges to meet the dog. In addition to opening their homes to prospective adoptive families, the St. Francis foster family provides vital information as to how the prospective adoptive family interacts with the dog, and how the dog responds.
